Homemade GF Beauty

Gluten-Free beauty products can be expensive and difficult to find and not always the most natural in their ingredients! So I have decided to share a few of my favourite beauty recipes that are 100% GF and will leave you feeling positively radiant!

Deep Cleanse Facial Scrub

You will need:
1 tablespoon of natural, unpasteurized honey (I use presidents choice, its also organic and inexpensive however if you want to go local check out Buzz Honey (https://www.facebook.com/buzzhoney for info on where to find them and their products)
1 tablespoon of gluten-free baking soda (I use bobs red mill brand (http://www.bobsredmill.com/)
3 tablespoons of plain yogurt

Mix all these ingredients in a bowl and get scrubbing for beautiful skin! The honey is naturally antibacterial, when coupled with the natural scrubbing power of baking soda it banishes acne the clean way!

Gluten Free Hot Oil Conditioner

Simply warm coconut oil for 2-3 minutes in the microwave (I buy mine at costco for $17.99/54 ounces making it super cost effective for use in beauty http://www.carringtonfarms.com/organic-extra-virgin-coconut-oil-12-oz-tub-54-oz-bottle/
Massage into hair and scalp and leave in for 15 minutes or up to over night for truly unruly hair. Be sure to rinse thoroughly and enjoy gluten free tame hair.

Gluten Free All Natural Body Polish

Take 5-6 medium sized strawberries, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 tbs. of olive oil
Mash strawberries with sugar and olive oil, rub over any rough areas (knees, elbows, feet, legs) and rinse with water.
*ensure sugar is gluten-free (check cross for contamination)

Moisturizing Bath Oil

Take 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and 5-10 drops of any one of your favourite essential oils (I love eucalyptus or lavender) and add to hot running bath water, stirring the water until the coconut oil is melted. Step in a soak away dry skin! (Eden in the Calgary Farmers Market sells wonderful essential oils and oil blends.) http://www.calgaryfarmersmarket.ca/vendors/eden_essentials/

Gluten Free Beauty

While sitting in my class today I decided to put on some hand lotion, my celiac friend grabbed the tube and mentioned that there were oats in it….oats, processed near wheat, grown near wheat fields, cross contamination, touching food, gluten is on hands, gluten goes onto my apple, bam I am ingesting gluten, yikes!! This then sent me into a gluten paranoia, forcing me to check my lip balm, lipsticks and other makeup, body washes and body lotions.

Now ingesting gluten in any form is a no no in celiac disease, however some celiacs experience a form of dermatitis when they come into contact with gluten topically.

Dermatitis herpetiformis will affect between 15-25 percent of people with celiac disease at some point in their lives (Blumer & Crowe, 2010). It has been deemed the celiac disease of the skin and manifests itself in the form of a skin rash that affects the skin of the:
-Elbows, Knees, and buttocks as well as the  face, scalp and back
-Pink, blister like sores that are raised above the skin in these areas will appear when in contact with gluten
-Itchiness will accompany the sores

The most common nasty terms I found in my products were colloidal oatmeal, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and hydrolyzed wheat germ and modified vegetable proteins which could contain wheat.

Now while I could populate my own list of gluten free beauty I thought that I would refer you to one fabulous gluten free resource The Celiac Diva, her site has a very extensive and newer list of current gluten free beauty.
